Tragedy: Woman, 75 died after gun accidental discharge


Tragedy struck in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital when a 75-year old woman, Ibitokun Shewu of Ile-Alomata, Kamaldeen Street, Oke-Kere, Ilorin, died after she was hit with bullets when a gun accidentally discharged.

The urgly incident occurred at Ile-Araoyo, Alore, Ilorin, on Monday at about 8:00 pm, while the aged woman was returning home after she had paid a visit to a friend.
One of the sons of the deceased, Ibrahim Ashiriabo, who told The Herald that the family and sympathizers were just returning from burial ground where they performed the last rite for their late mother, said the sudden death of their mother was so painful but they have taken it as an act of God.
Ashiriabo alleged that one vigilante man caused the death of their mother.
According to him, the gun of the vigilante man while riding a motorcycle along Alore Area, Ilorin, with his wife and children, fell on the ground and he told his wife to pick it up for him.
“When the wife was trying to pick the gun, she mistakenly held the trigger and the gun accidentally discharged and hit the deceased in the stomach”, he said.
The deceased’s son added that their mother gave up the ghost as a result of injuries she sustinaned from the gun shot.
Contacted on the issue, the Police Public Relation Officer, (PPRO), ASP Ajayi J. Okansanmi confirmed the incident and said that the bullets also hit three persons, who were in their shop, but they were responding to treatment at a private hospital in Ilorin.
The PPRO also said that the suspect is currently in their custody undergoing interrogation and he will be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed.
